Colour, Fabric and Fit Rules

Base colours, the three-colour outfit rule, fabric choices and fit checks that make pieces interchangeable.

The rules that make a capsule work are structural, not stylistic. The first is the base colour rule: a capsule is built around one or two neutral base colours, which is what allows every top to work with every bottom across the whole set. Without that constraint, the outfit math does not apply.

The second rule is the three-colour outfit rule, which keeps combinations coherent: one base colour, one secondary, one accent, all drawn from the capsule's palette. It is the difference between outfits that combine and outfits that merely coexist in the same closet.

Fabric choice is the third rule, and it is practical rather than aesthetic. Fabrics that layer and combine with the rest of the capsule are the ones that keep the set interchangeable; fabrics that fight the rest of the set become dead weight in the wardrobe.

Fit is the fourth rule, and the most unforgiving. A piece that does not fit will not be worn, and a piece that is not worn has an effectively infinite cost per wear — whatever its price tag said at the point of purchase.

These rules are applied twice: during the audit, when the keep pile is sorted, and again at the point of purchase, when a new piece is considered against the list of gaps. Applying them at both points is what keeps the capsule small and the wardrobe honest.

The rules also explain the working size. A seasonal capsule of about 25 to 40 pieces including shoes and outerwear is only workable because every piece in it combines with the rest — and that is exactly what the colour, fabric and fit rules guarantee.

  • Base colour rule: one or two neutral colours, so every top works with every bottom.
  • Three-colour outfit rule: base, secondary, accent, drawn from the capsule's palette.
  • Fabric rule: prefer fabrics that layer and combine with the rest of the capsule.
  • Fit rule: a piece that does not fit will not be worn, and an unworn piece has an infinite cost per wear.
  • Apply the rules during the audit and again before every purchase.
